Advancing digital pandemic response for a silent global crisis

Spearhead is a national Swiss consortium uniting 8 public and 4 private institutions to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) - a growing global health threat projected to cause 10 million deaths annually by 2050. The initiative builds on pandemic-era digital breakthroughs to create an integrated, citizen-engaged response to AMR. WAAT leads the software development for the project’s modular, scalable digital platform.

The brief: Build a digital infrastructure for real-time diagnostics, engagement and strategy

WAAT contributes to the project by designing and developing a digital platform that supports a rapid, multi-layered response to antimicrobial resistance. The platform facilitates real-time data exchange with healthcare decision-makers, integrates advanced data modelling for patient stratification, and enables decentralised diagnostic workflows beyond traditional lab settings. The challenge is to build a modular, future-ready system that addresses today’s AMR crisis while remaining adaptable for future pandemic responses.

Digital solutions: A modular platform for health resilience

  1. Rapid diagnostic integration

We are engineering a platform that can ingest results from next-generation diagnostic tools and provide real-time access to clinicians and patients - cutting response times and improving antibiotic stewardship.

  2. Advanced data modelling

Our data architecture enables risk stratification and predictive analytics, helping health professionals make better, faster decisions with fewer resources.

  3. Citizen engagement tools

We are embedding user-facing interfaces that allow individuals to contribute to data collection, access personal results, and engage with learning resources to better understand AMR and its risks.

  4. Secure, scalable infrastructure

Designed with interoperability, GDPR compliance, and cross-border scalability in mind, the system uses microservices architecture to allow for adaptation across use cases and health systems.

  5. Visual dashboards for public health officials

We’re delivering custom dashboards that provide decision-makers with live, actionable data to guide public health strategies, antibiotic usage trends, and community risk levels.

Outcome

Spearhead represents a paradigm shift in how we approach AMR: not just as a clinical challenge, but as a societal one requiring rapid diagnostics, transparent data, and public participation. WAAT’s technology is at the heart of this response, building a platform that will inform policy, empower patients, and shape resilient health systems across Europe and beyond.
